EDGE-ucational Media Company’s Covid-19 REsponse

EDGE-UCATIONAL MEDIA COMPANY’S COVID-19 RESPONSE

EMC Banner header

Well how the fuck are you doing right now!?

Covid-19 aka Coronavirus is currently sending an enormous ripple across the globe. Oddly enough, I happen to be living here in what is now considered the American epicenter of the virus, New York City. Brooklyn to be exact.

I’ve been listening intently to New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo. He has been a steady, transparent, and reassuring figure right now.

Its amazing to know that the last post on this platform, in December 2019, was in a world where I was not sitting here amongst billions of people impacted by the appearance of a new global threat. I could have never imagined there was a “thing” so powerful that is sent shockwaves through the entire planet like this.

I sat and watched, really listened (I have a free subscription to the Washington Post, New York Times, and Wall Street Journal via audible. You should check it out) to the outbreak begin oddly uniquely in China. How back then there were small percentages to the story, usually one sentence or so, to the idea that Corona virus would indeed impact the world. And that American ought to get prepared….

Its amazing to know that in 3 months time or so…. the impact is now being felt more amplified (do we know that? I don’t believe Chinas #’s… just saying) here in the states.

Life has changed. Drastically. The animal piece of me, worked to live in the shock. To realize it. To allow it to stimulate my senses. For the past 2 years or so I’ve been so focused on that for some reason. The ability of my sense’s to pick up messages along different frequencies… My senses told me to feel and receive the different messages sent up into the air. Process them and evaluate what you deem true, what you deem important, what you deem relevant to you in this time of shaking Earth. And now my brain is telling me to reset, to ground, but also be in action of moving my life along and forward in calibration to the shaking ground.

I’ve done a lot of breathing. I’ve fallen victim to a lot of sleeping. To which I lean in to. I’ve been untethered to many avenues in which I received life sustaining funding and income. I’ve been freed.

The response – now – is to germinate the Earth with what it tells me it needs.

I hope you find this message in peace. In a time of protection and personal stability. If not, that is ok too.

Breathe.

Allow your sense’s (sight, smell, taste, feel, hearing, and beyond) to feel the air. Taste it. Take it in. Hear it. Sense it. Feel it above you. As it passes through you and under your feet. And flows past and around your skin. Determine what your body needs. What your human package needs.

Give yourself permission to bring it here. To create it.

Surround yourself with the resources that will make it so.

In response to the Covid-19 interruption of daily living we here at MyEdgeMedia want to encourage you to be safe. Encourage you to stake claim to what you need to thrive. And wish to partner with you in bringing it to fruition!

Stay tuned as we re-calibrate and reconnect a strengthened and more steadfast signal.

We welcome comments and connections below from those interested in bringing their voice back to the Earth.

Entrepreneurship Is The New Black: Counting Consulting Checks

BEDA Day 12 of 31

Shout out to my mom. Today is her birthday. Love you pretty lady.

20160812_133841

You’re looking at a check I received for some consulting work I completed this Spring.

Back Story:

I was never a fan of gloating about money. But, I did want to show you that the idea that you can turn YOUR idea into a hustle and a business. That is a real thing. Ya boy Paladin did it. And I promise you yall are so much more talented than me. This blog was a Launchpad for my creativity. And now I get paid, on top of my teaching salary, to perform my skills for folks!

I want yall to be able to do the same thing. I already know you’re talented enough to! Now we just gotta give you a little blueprint to get you started.

The past 2 years I’ve pushed to break into the workshop and consulting scene. In the past year, I also hopped on the opportunity to obtain my personal training license. As a result. I was a legit entrepreneur in this year of 30. I’ve managed to identify at least 3 sources of residual income that I can bring in for Empire.

How to read this:

I’m going to share 3 sources with you. While I can’t be certain the real reasons these ventures have turned into revenue streams in my life. I do plan to describe my intentions and short trajectory in each. Remember, think course roadmap. Use my journey, tweak it for YOUR use and purpose, and go kick them doors in yo! (See my post tomorrow to know why I’m oh so serious about this!)

Income Source 1 – Produce and Facilitate Workshops – I’ve run a handful of workshops over the past 2 years. To date I’ve run roughly 10 workshops ranging from 4 participants to 100 participants. My largest client to date has been my former graduate school.

Definition: A workshop is a presentation or performance in which a group of people are facilitated through a discussion or activity on a certain subject. Skills: Planning, Communicating with clients and audience, finding and modifying tools to share during workshop. Making any additional materials needed such Feedback survey, handouts, creating presentation PowerPoint/presentations, organizing photography and video collection. Training trying new types of workshops, not being afraid to work with large crowds, soliciting feedback from partners and collaborators. Income Type: Largest independent cashflow I receive. Currently have a bid out in the thousands. You’re invoicing here, which means you wont see your money for weeks, if not months down the line. Growth: Continue to search for larger audience. Develop partnerships with institutions to provide trainings and workshops for them. Learn additional skills and tools in the field. Start submitting to speak at more conferences.

Income Source 2 – Personal Training Sessions – Last Fall, I became a certified personal trainer through the National Association of Sports Medicine (NASM CPT). I’ve taken on the task of providing private personal training lessons.

Definition: A customized fitness lesson used to improve someone’s fitness levels. Fitness can include weightlifting, aerobics, cardio activities, body weight training, stretching, etc… (I’m sure I missed a few) Skills: Conversation, Workout/Lesson Planning, Strength Training Knowledge, Exercise Safety Knowledge, Ability to push clients, Knowledge and application of force on the body, charisma. Training: Teaching is daily training for this. Each session I tried to create new and unique programs from my own knowledge. Income Type: Fast turnover. One client: Four 45-60 minute trainings sessions over 2 weeks would bring in roughly $180 -$240. At one time I was juggling 4 clients. I was brining in over $1,000 a month – and I was playing. Growth: Finding ways to maximize my earning potential. Currently can only earn when I’m with a client physically. Want to develop programs that can be utilized without needing me to be present.

Income Source 3 – Graduate School Technical Assistance – I’ve done some consulting work with my former graduate school. This all began from developing a good name with some of my professors. I pushed to produce excellent work, and that work ethic has carried over into consulting opportunities.

Definition: Consulting is a very vague word. To me, it means providing a company/entity services they either can’t or don’t want to do themselves. There’s BREAD in that! And a lot of super valuable experience points. Skills: Consulting work can be anything. For me it looked like grading papers and giving feedback, giving classroom lectures, creating teaching tools for the school like writing prompts, running focus groups, reviewing work expectations with students, helping students develop masters portfolios, etc… Training: Consulting is training to me. It allows me to practice the things that I want to learn how to do better. Anything that I don’t want to do I can either say no, or do it anyway to learn a new skill. Income Type: Invoicing, have to wait for invoices to be processed by clients. For 10 hours of work, I’ve billed $500. Growth: In order to be successful I need to develop better relationships with clients, potential clients, and potential partners.

Each of these methods has been a great confidence booster for me. While I enjoy personal training the least. There was something about knowing that if I ever lost my job, I could pick up clients and be ensured a secure livelihood that gave me freedom and confidence. Each method has built my confidence and skills. And both are equally important to me!

Reflection Questions:

Have you thought about consulting/running your own business before?

What skills do you have right now that you KNOW you can sell for profit?

What do your friends always ask you to do for them, but you say no?

(People had been asking me to be their personal trainer for at least 6 years before I finally got out of my own way by saying no)

What do you do at work, that you can use in private to make a profit?

Early Reflections: Black Male Empowerment Gathering 2

Early Reflections: Black Male Empowerment

Gathering 2

A lot of educators in the room. Both the first and second gathering was filled mostly by educators. I’m curious to know what draws us to these events. I’ve also been unsuccessful drawing and maintaining the attention of non education centered folks. What work can I do to better engage this audience?

I’ve realized that this is difficult to do. I was explaining to a friend that I’m entering a new phase in my skillset, in my work. I’m leaving a phase of education and learning via graduate school and learning a new industry and field of education. I’m not in a creation phase. Trying to create an educational vestige in my own image. Its hard. Its overwhelming. It’s humbling. It makes taking constructive criticism so much more difficult to hear and implement. I’m in a space where I’m re-nervous. Re-insecure of my moves and actions.thinking

People wonder why I’m doing this. What’s the mission? What’s the point? I haven’t developed a clear concise answer for them yet. But I know that the space is necessary and so I’m still trying to carve it out and save it while we figure out what language to prop it up and ground it in.

There have been a variety of men who have attended for a variety of purposes. Coming from many different stages of life and hoping to reap various benefits from such a gathering. My mind is focusing on usefulness. Making the space useful and beneficial for the participants. I think we’re getting there. Again I probably need to expose myself to language from other organizers as they worked to define the specs of their work.

Some more positive reflections is that we stuck to our 2-hour agenda window. That felt good considering some of the feedback of our last one was the difficult position we put attendees in when we went over time. Ending on time actually allowed for natural networking to take place at the end between the men in attendance.

Teacher moves are still on point and applicable. I had forgotten a chord to hook my mac up to the University smart board. Luckily there was a computer already in the room, but I didn’t know the password. With about 20 minutes to go I started frantically making flipchart of all the slides. I was just about done with the flipchart and rearranging a few pieces on the agenda when with 2 minutes to spare we got the password for the classroom computer. I made all of the materials available on Google Drive so it was just a matter of signing in an cueing the materials up from there. I felt good knowing that in the time of a crisis I didn’t panic, came up with an alternative plan and rocked with it whole heartedly in the spur of the moment. That’s absolutely what’s needed.

I must say that I was a bit shocked that it was time to have the second gathering. I was overwhelmed with work. Trying to have a somewhat full personal life. Still readjusting from traveling overseas, and… just drained. I had very little time to properly publicize the event. Luckily, I opened a MeetUp group with supported the engagement of interested community members.

I’m excited to work on the publicity in the future as I know it’s not my strongest area. Which is a perfect segue into two of the most pressing pieces of the work to date. Finding a Name for the group, Determining a mission, and Figuring out the proper Branding. This part is the biggest headache. Probably because I have my undergraduate Public Relations training pushing against my Education training. I absolutely know the importance of a strong image and marketing portfolio. However, I feel like that can easily be developed once I have a strong foundation and understanding of my curriculum and community services. It’s the battle of which one do I focus on first.

Teacher, Tell Me about Life and Niggers

Teacher, Tell Me about Life and Niggers:

A classroom and email conversation with two Black-Male students

enza-Academy

I recently received an email from a Black male student asking me to explain life to him. He’s an older student and this is the first time I’ve taught him at the school. This was a first time I’ve had a student reach out for such poignant information. The following day, before I could respond, he told me that he and a friend, also in my class, were riding the train the night before talking to each other, and they kept saying the word Nigga.

Somewhere through the journey they confessed having made an older woman cry due to their reckless public vulgarity. It was then that I found out why my student had reached out to me about life the evening before.

Both students told me inconsistent stories about the events as they happened in real time, jokingly placing blame on each other, in a denial-deflection-comedic-confession with each other.

In the moment, there was work to be done, so, I expressed sincere dissappointment in their actions and inability to manage their behavior in context, and specifically with regard to the elder, then redirected them to their work with intentions to reply in detail via email.

The following was my email response:

==============================

What’s up y’all.

Ok, my bad that it’s taken me so long to respond. I wanted to make sure I sent something thoughtful back. Here’s some feedback.

Nigga Response

It’s a dreadful word. It’s used to describe a group of people stolen from their land, and bred to be enslaved-captured people here in the American continents. The African people when I visited don’t call themselves nigga. The enslaved Africans were renamed Negroes by the European and other geographic people. It has been so ingrained that those African people have now taken to calling themselves Negroes instead of what they truly were and are. That’s why it’s a bad thing to hear so many Black/African people say Negroes/Nigga/Niqqa/Nicca. It’s a word of negativity and weakenss. The moment you stop calling yourself and your loved ones that word you start to get a stronger grip on the world, your history, and your role now in it. I hope that made sense. Here is a link to some phrases/meanings of negro throughout our recent history. I found this really useful for my own knowledge about 4 years ago.

I view y’all as so much more than niggers, niggas, you know all the spellings. In real life, I view myself as a young King. Everyday Paladin, the young King walks into the classroom. Everyday I’m greeted by young Warriors [Student 1] and [Student 2]. But as long as you’re calling yourself a nigger you’re never going to realize that. Nigger and King are opposites. Nigger and Warrior are opposites. Nigger and whatever you want to be known as are probably opposites.

The lady was probably mortified that y’all couldn’t edit the word out even if you tried. I get really sad too when I see kids out and they just can’t control it. We’ve been taught to say it. It has power over you. And that’s not good bro. But the good thing is it’s easy to stop. You just have to choose a different word to say. In college my frat brother started saying ninja, then we all started saying ninja. Then somewhere along the line I started saying homie. Now I even say bro. I say fam. I even say King. Choose something and roll with it. I try my absolute best not to call people that I love nigga.

Fashion –

Y’all ask me and I never really remember in the moment. I get a lot of stuff from thrift stores. My regular stuff is from Levis, American Apparel, Uniqlo, Urban Outfitters, stuff I see on Instagram, and sometimes the vendors on the streets. I normally check the sales. But will spend real money every once and a while for stuff that will last like jackets, bookbags, and boots. I rarely pay over 50 for a shirt or pants. Normally never more than 70 for shoes. Anything more prolly just isn’t worth it. Watch your money and save your money. A lot of my stuff is like 5 to 10 years old. When you buy stuff that fits well it lasts longer in my opinion.

Tutoring Time –

I’m available everyday during lunch:

  • Monday/Wednesday/Friday – [Location] – Lunch
  • Tuesday/Thursday – [Location] –  Lunch

I also try to stay after school for at least 20 to 30 minutes trying to cool down and wrap up loose ends of the day. If no one comes I bounce. I hustle outside of work and get tired if I’m not on the move. Trust y’all are always welcome to tutoring and after school-time. Just come, and we’ll find something to do.

Hustle

Y’all are smart. Y’all run the yard and I love it. But I need you both to step it up. You both set the tone for everyone else. I need you guys to work with me & [Co-teacher] in the classroom. Drive the attention to the learning. You aren’t horrible, but you aren’t hustling either. I need you both grabbing these knowledge points. Right now and even if you don’t have me anymore. You both have talent and like a team I need you to push your squad, and me and [Co-teacher], the coaches. Push your talents on the basketball court and in my classroom please. I definitely am trying to bring you my A+ work and I need y’all to help me be great by doing the same please.
Football-Training

I’m long winded. Enjoy your weekends. Be safe.
